Mamata Banerjee Backs Congress in Nandigram, Completing Political Circle
Mamata Banerjee started her political career in the Congress party.
She later left it and created the Trinamool Congress, which became a major force in West Bengal.
For many years, her party and the Congress competed against each other.
On Friday, Banerjee said her party would support the Congress candidate in the Nandigram bypoll.
Her party’s candidate withdrew from the race before the announcement.
Banerjee said the decision would improve relations and strengthen the INDIA alliance.
She has not yet decided what her party will do in the Rejinagar bypoll.
The decision is notable because she is now helping the party she once left.
Mamata Banerjee announced that the Trinamool Congress would support the Congress in the October 6 Nandigram Assembly bypoll.
The announcement followed the withdrawal of the Trinamool Congress candidate from the contest.
Banerjee said the decision was intended to improve relations and strengthen the INDIA alliance, while the party would decide later on Rejinagar.
Banerjee began her political career with the Congress before leaving in 1998 to establish the Trinamool Congress.
The move comes as Banerjee faces a weakened party, internal rebellions, and the continuing challenge posed by the Bharatiya Janata Party in West Bengal.
