India-US Trade Talks Reach Plateau as Further Concessions Become Difficult

India and the United States are still talking about a trade agreement.

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said the talks may have reached a point where it is hard for either country to make more concessions.

She said they could still see whether there is room to work through their differences.

The United States wants to reduce its trade deficit with India, while India wants better access for its goods and protection for sensitive areas.

India exported more to the United States than it imported during April-July.

The two countries announced a framework for an interim agreement in February 2026, but talks on a broader deal are continuing.

Sitharaman also said tariffs are increasingly being used to pressure countries over trade imbalances.

She pointed to India’s agreement with the European Union as an example of trying to balance trade access with national interests.

Reports differ on whether she spoke at the Munich Leaders Meeting or the Munich Security Conference, and one report places the meeting in New Delhi.
