Supreme Court Acquits Nithari Killings Accused, Families Feel Defeated
Imagine a very sad event where many children and women went missing and were found to have been killed in a village called Nithari.
Two people, Surinder Koli and Moninder Singh Pandher, were accused of these terrible crimes, and many people were very angry and wanted them punished.
They were even sentenced to death at first.
But over time, judges looked very carefully at the case.
The judges found that there wasn't enough solid proof to be sure they did it.
So, a higher court, the Allahabad High Court, said they were not guilty in 2023.
Then, the very highest court, the Supreme Court, looked at the last case against Koli and agreed.
They said there wasn't enough evidence and he should be let go.
This means Koli has been released after almost 20 years in jail.
However, the families of the people who were killed are very sad and feel like they haven't gotten justice, even though the courts found the evidence wasn't strong enough.
Surinder Koli has been acquitted by the Supreme Court in the final case related to the 2006 Nithari serial killings, leading to his release after nearly 20 years.
The Allahabad High Court had previously acquitted both Koli and Moninder Singh Pandher in 2023, citing a lack of evidence.
The Nithari killings, which involved the disappearance and murder of several children and women, caused widespread outrage when they came to light in 2006.
Victims' families have expressed despair and a feeling of injustice following the acquittals, questioning the outcome of the legal process.
Both accused were initially sentenced to death, but acquittals by the Allahabad High Court and Supreme Court were based on insufficient evidence and procedural concerns.
