Supreme Court Temporarily Allows Trump White House Ballroom Construction

President Donald Trump wants to build a very large ballroom at the White House.

The historic East Wing was demolished to make room for it.

Lower courts said most aboveground construction should stop because Congress may need to approve such a major change.

They allowed some underground and safety work to continue.

The Trump administration says the president can renovate the White House and that the project will improve security.

The administration also says the project is already 65% complete and is privately funded.

Chief Justice John Roberts temporarily allowed construction to continue while the Supreme Court studies the case.

This order does not decide whether the project is ultimately legal.
