Ancient Lake Arendsee Wood May Rewrite Settlement History

Ancient Lake Arendsee Wood May Rewrite Settlement History

Divers found very old pieces of wood beneath Lake Arendsee in Germany.

The wood is as much as 10,500 years old.

It was preserved under a layer of lake sediment.

Some pieces have marks that may show people cut and shaped them.

Scientists think hunter-gatherers might have used the wood to build huts or other structures.

They are not certain what the structures were or whether they were permanent homes.

If they were permanent, people may have settled in the area much earlier than researchers thought.

The find could change ideas about how early communities lived in Central Europe.
