US withdraws from 66 international organizations
The United States has decided to leave 66 international organisations, conventions, and treaties.
This includes 35 non-UN organisations and 31 UN entities.
Some of the organisations they are leaving are the International Solar Alliance, which is led by India and France, and important environmental groups like the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
The US President, Donald Trump, made this decision because he believes these groups are not good for the interests of the United States.
Other organisations the US is leaving include the International Energy Forum, the International Renewable Energy Agency, the Partnership for Atlantic Cooperation, and the Global Counterterrorism Forum.
This decision was announced in a statement from the White House.
Additionally, the US will withdraw from the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), UN Women, and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA).
Environmental groups have condemned the decision, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended it as fulfilling Trump's campaign promises.
The Trump administration has previously suspended support for multilateral bodies such as the World Health Organization, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees – The United Nations Relief and Works Agency – the UN Human Rights Council, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
US President Donald Trump signed a memorandum directing the withdrawal of the United States from 66 international organisations, conventions, and treaties.
The withdrawal includes 35 non-UN organisations and 31 UN entities, such as the International Solar Alliance, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
Among the most significant exits is the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the foundational treaty underpinning all major global climate agreements.
The US will also quit UN Women, which works for gender equality and the empowerment of women, and the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), focused on family planning and maternal health.
Environmental groups condemned the decision, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio defended it as fulfilling Trump's campaign promises.
