FCRA Amendment Bill 2026 Tightens India's Foreign Funding Rules

FCRA Amendment Bill 2026 Tightens India's Foreign Funding Rules

India has a rule called the FCRA that decides how charities and other groups can receive money from other countries.

The government wants to make sure this foreign money is used for the good things it was given for, like helping sick people or teaching children.

So it has proposed a new law, the FCRA Amendment Bill 2026, to make the rules stronger.

Some organisations have been caught using foreign money in wrong ways, like paying for personal trips or business costs.

Because of this, the government stopped or cancelled the permission of 13 groups to receive foreign money.

One group, Advantage India, is accused of getting about ₹90.72 crore and using some of it for personal purposes.

Another group, Oxfam India, is accused of moving foreign money to other organisations without permission.

The rules do not stop foreign donations for good work, but they ask every organisation to keep clear records and tell the government what they did with the money.

This helps make sure the money reaches the people it was meant to help.

The first version of this law was created in 1976, and the government says these stronger rules will help honest charities too.
