Global gold demand hits record high in 2025
In 2025, the world bought more gold than ever before, with a total demand of 5,002 tonnes.
This big increase was mostly because people wanted to invest in gold as a safe place to put their money, especially because there were a lot of uncertainties in the world.
The price of gold also went up a lot, but even with the higher prices, people still wanted to buy gold jewelry.
Central banks, which are like the banks of countries, also bought a lot of gold to keep as reserves.
In India, the demand for gold went down by 11% because of the high prices, but the value of the gold bought went up by 30%.
The World Gold Council, which studies gold markets, said that 2025 was a year where gold was very popular because people were worried about the economy and politics.
In early 2026, the price of gold and silver continued to rise, with gold reaching USD 5,600 per ounce and silver at USD 120 per ounce.
The gold-to-silver ratio also changed, showing that silver was becoming more popular.
The high prices and uncertainties made people want to hold onto their gold instead of selling it.
Global gold demand reached a new all-time high of 5,002 tonnes in 2025, up from 4,961.9 tonnes in 2024, driven by investment demand due to safe-haven and diversification factors.
Investment demand surged by 84% to 2,175.3 tonnes in 2025, while consumer demand in the October-December quarter increased by 2% to 1,345.3 tonnes.
The average gold price globally stood at USD 2,709.7 per ounce in January 2025, up from USD 2,034 per ounce in January 2024, with gold prices reaching USD 5,600 per ounce in April 2026.
Central bank demand remained elevated in 2025, with the official sector adding 863 tonnes of gold, and the Reserve Bank of India adding 4 tonnes to its reserves.
In India, overall gold demand fell 11% to 710.9 tonnes in 2025, but the value of gold demand increased by 30% to Rs 7,51,490 crores due to record-high prices and changing consumer buying patterns.
