Bangladesh Faces Measles Crisis With Over 1,000 Deaths

Bangladesh is experiencing a very large measles outbreak.

More than 1.89 lakh people, mostly children, became sick or showed measles-like symptoms.

At least 1.49 lakh people needed hospital care.

The reported number of deaths from confirmed and suspected cases reached 1,012.

Measles can usually be prevented with vaccines.

Health experts say routine vaccinations were disrupted during Covid-19.

Some vulnerable children were missed, especially in poor or hard-to-reach communities.

The government vaccinated nearly 1.97 crore children but later acknowledged that its original estimate of the target population was too low.
