Mumbai Metro Spit Box Sparks Debate Over Public Spitting
Mumbai Metro has placed a special bin for people who spit.
The bin is meant to give commuters a specific place to spit instead of using walls, floors or regular bins.
Some people think this could make stations cleaner.
Others worry that the bin could make spitting seem acceptable.
Some critics also say it might encourage people to consume ghutka while traveling.
The facility has instructions in Marathi and English.
It carries the logos of MMRDA and Maha Mumbai Metro.
People are now debating whether special bins or stronger rules would work better.
A touchless spit box was installed at a Mumbai Metro station with MMRDA and Maha Mumbai Metro logos.
The facility is labeled the “World's First Defined Place To Spit” and includes Marathi and English instructions.
Supporters say a designated bin could keep commuters from spitting on walls, floors and ordinary trash bins.
Critics argue the facility may normalize spitting, encourage ghutka consumption and conflict with cleanliness efforts.
The installation has prompted debate over whether designated facilities or stricter enforcement would better address public spitting.
