Five Killed as Amazon Cargo Plane Overruns Miami Runway
An Amazon cargo plane went past the end of a runway while landing in Miami.
It crossed a nearby road and hit several vehicles.
The plane caught fire and at least five people died.
Five other people were hurt, including three who were critically injured.
Rescue workers freed people from cars and searched for the trapped pilot and copilot.
About 200 emergency personnel responded, while firefighters battled flames and a fuel leak.
The plane had flown from Puerto Rico and was operated by 21 Air for Amazon.
Investigators are trying to find out why the plane could not stop.
Many flights were canceled, delayed, or diverted because of the crash.
Amazon Prime Air Flight 7598 overran a runway at Miami International Airport around 2 p.m. Sunday.
The Boeing 767-300, operated by 21 Air, arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico.
The aircraft crossed a nearby roadway, struck multiple vehicles, and caught fire, killing at least five people.
Five others were injured, including three critically; officials had not determined whether the victims were aboard the plane or in vehicles.
The FAA and NTSB opened investigations as the crash caused more than 160 cancellations and nearly 325 delays.

Possible contributing factors
What remains unconfirmed
Touchdown and landing decision
Possible contributing factors
Aviation experts Steve Arroyo and Mary Schiavo said investigators may examine whether the plane touched down beyond the designated touchdown zone, floated too long, or should have aborted the landing and gone around. Schiavo said available video appeared to show the aircraft remaining airborne over the runway for an extended period.
What remains unconfirmed
Officials have not determined whether the aircraft landed inside the required touchdown zone or whether crew decisions, braking, or aircraft performance caused the overrun.
Weather conditions
Possible contributing factors
Thunderstorms and wind gusts of up to about 30 mph were reported near the time of the crash, making weather a possible investigative factor.
What remains unconfirmed
Authorities had not confirmed that weather contributed to the accident.
Runway-end safety systems
Possible contributing factors
Mary Schiavo noted that Miami International Airport does not have the crushable-material arresting systems installed at more than 120 U.S. airports to help stop runway-overrunning aircraft.
What remains unconfirmed
The reports did not establish whether such a system would have prevented the crash or reduced its consequences.
