RBI Mandates Faster Cheque Clearance from October 4
Imagine you write a check to buy something.
Right now, it takes a couple of days for the money to move from your account to the person you wrote the check to.
But the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), which is like the boss of all banks in India, wants to make this process much faster.
Starting in October 2025, checks will be processed in just a few hours!
Banks will scan the checks and send them to a clearing house, which then tells the banks if the checks are okay.
If everything goes as planned, you will get your money faster.
This is a two-step process.
During the first phase, banks have to check if the check is fine before 7 p.m.
After the second phase begins, things will run even quicker.
RBI mandates quicker cheque clearance, aiming for a few hours instead of up to two days.
The new system uses continuous clearing during business hours, improving efficiency.
Cheque Truncation System (CTS) will transition to continuous clearing in two phases.
Phase 1 starts October 4, 2025, with drawee banks confirming cheques by 7 pm.
Phase 2, from January 3, 2026, will update the expiry time to T+3 clear hours.
