Delhi High Court Seeks Student Housing Safety Mechanism

Delhi High Court Seeks Student Housing Safety Mechanism

A student asked the Delhi High Court to make private student housing safer.

Many students live in paying guest homes, rented flats or private hostels because colleges have limited hostel space.

The request came after a building in Satya Niketan collapsed on September 6.

Seven people died, including five students.

The petition says students need a clear way to report unsafe buildings, fires, overcrowding, poor sanitation, overcharging and harassment.

It suggests committees involving students, colleges, police, city officials and other groups.

These committees could operate helplines, email services and online complaint portals.

They could also help authorities inspect buildings and take action against unsafe or unauthorised accommodation.

The court has asked authorities to respond before considering the broader proposals.
