TRAI Ends BSNL's Spectrum Privilege
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has decided not to give special treatment to BSNL for spectrum charges on its satellite services.
Before, BSNL was charged only 1% of its earnings for using satellite spectrum, but now TRAI wants all satellite service providers, including BSNL, to pay 4%.
This change is because the market has more players now, and TRAI wants to make sure everyone is treated fairly.
Before, BSNL was the only one providing these services, mostly for government use.
But now, satellite services are used more for regular business, so TRAI thinks the old special treatment isn't fair anymore.
This decision will make things clearer for new companies entering the market, even though it might cost BSNL more in the long run.
TRAI rejected DoT's proposal for preferential spectrum pricing for BSNL's satellite services.
Uniform spectrum charge of 4% of AGR proposed for all satellite service providers.
Preferential treatment for BSNL deemed discriminatory in a multi-player market.
Market evolution since 2018 necessitates revised regulatory pricing.
Decision aims to integrate satellite communications into the mainstream telecom framework.
