Arbitrator Orders Washington Post to Rehire Columnist Karen Attiah

Arbitrator Orders Washington Post to Rehire Columnist Karen Attiah

Karen Attiah was an opinion writer for The Washington Post.

She posted comments online after Charlie Kirk was shot in September 2025.

The newspaper said her posts hurt its reputation and broke its social-media rules.

It also said the posts might put employees’ safety at risk.

Attiah said discussing political violence was part of her job.

An independent arbitrator reviewed the disagreement.

The arbitrator decided that the newspaper had not shown serious misconduct.

The arbitrator ordered the newspaper to give Attiah her job back and pay her lost wages and benefits.

Attiah said she was willing to return and hoped the decision would protect journalists’ freedom to express opinions.
