J&K Assembly Chaos Follows Statehood Resolution and Autonomy Clash

Jammu and Kashmir’s Assembly had a very loud argument on Friday.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah asked the Indian government to restore full statehood to the region.

The resolution also mentioned an older 2000 resolution about greater autonomy.

BJP members opposed including that reference because they wanted the discussion to focus only on statehood.

Members of the National Conference, Congress and allied parties defended the reference.

Legislators from both sides entered the central area of the House and shouted competing slogans.

Some members also became involved in physical scuffles.

The Speaker paused the meeting for half an hour to try to restore order.
