Assam Passes 10 Bills Including Polygamy Ban
The Assam Legislative Assembly passed 10 new laws on November 28, 2025.
One of the most important laws is the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, which makes it illegal for someone to have more than one wife at the same time.
If someone is found guilty of this, they can go to jail for up to seven years.
If they hide their first marriage and marry again, they can go to jail for up to ten years.
The law also says that people who help someone get married when they already have a spouse can also go to jail.
The law does not apply to certain tribal groups and areas.
The government says this law is to protect women and make sure they are treated fairly.
The Chief Minister also said that if his party wins the next election, they will introduce a Uniform Civil Code, which would make the same laws for marriage and family for everyone in the state, no matter their religion.
Other laws passed include ones about preserving important cultural sites, improving police and fire services, and making changes to university laws and tax laws.
Assam Legislative Assembly passed 10 bills on November 28, 2025, including the Assam Prohibition of Polygamy Bill, 2025, making polygamy a punishable offence with up to seven years of imprisonment.
The bill includes provisions for compensation to victim women and double punishment for repeat offenders.
Scheduled Tribes and areas under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution are exempt from the bill.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated that if the BJP returns to power, a Uniform Civil Code will be introduced in the first assembly session.
