Judge blocks Trump's deportation efforts over pro-Palestinian speech

A US judge said the government cannot deport people simply because they express certain political opinions.

The case involved noncitizen students and writers connected to The Stanford Daily.

Some students were afraid that speaking about Palestine or Israel could hurt their immigration status.

Judge Noël Wise said free speech belongs to citizens and noncitizens alike.

She said people should not have to stay silent to avoid punishment by the government.

The judge also said these actions were harming free speech on college campuses.

The decision builds on an earlier 2025 ruling about similar government actions.

The Stanford Daily said the ruling means its reporters should not fear deportation for writing stories.
