Punjab Panel To Discuss Akal Takht Sacrilege Law Suggestions
A Punjab government group will meet on October 6 to discuss changes to a law about disrespecting the Guru Granth Sahib.
The group will study suggestions made by Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
Another committee created by Sri Akal Takht Sahib is also examining the changes.
The two groups will discuss how to work together.
The government said the law’s main purpose and religious importance must be protected.
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann said the consultation should not weaken the law’s core provisions.
He specifically mentioned life imprisonment and large fines for people found guilty of Beadbi.
The meeting will take place in Chandigarh.
Punjab’s seven-member Coordination Committee will meet in Chandigarh on October 6.
The panel will review suggestions from Sri Akal Takht Sahib on amendments to the 2026 sacrilege law.
Discussions will cover provisions of the law and coordination with the Akal Takht-appointed committee.
The government said the legislation’s spirit and sanctity must be respected during consultations.
