Gig Workers Union Urges Central Government to Enforce Social Security Code
Imagine people who deliver food or drive taxis using apps.
A big group called IFAT wants the government to finally use a special rule, the Social Security Code, that was made for these workers.
This rule is supposed to give them things like health insurance, accident protection, and help when they get old.
But even though the rule was made years ago, it hasn't been used, leaving millions of workers without any safety net.
IFAT is asking the government to make this rule happen, maybe create a special board to help them, and get money from the app companies to pay for these benefits.
They want all workers across the country to be treated fairly and have basic protections.
The Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT) is urging the central government to implement the Social Security Code, 2020.
IFAT states that over two crore gig and platform workers are currently denied social protection.
The Social Security Code aims to provide benefits such as life and disability cover, accident insurance, health and maternity care, and old-age protection.
IFAT highlighted that five years after enactment, no schemes from the code have been operationalized, leaving workers without a safety net.
The union advocates for a single national law for uniform protection and suggests establishing a National Welfare Board and a Social Security Fund.
