Mumbai Police Housing and Stations Upgrade
The Maharashtra government has decided to give bigger homes to Mumbai Police officers, making the housing size equal to that in other parts of Maharashtra.
This is important because many officers have to travel very far to work due to a shortage of good homes near their jobs.
The government is also fixing problems with old, bad-quality homes.
Additionally, the government approved the establishment of four new police stations and two new administrative zones in Mumbai to improve policing efficiency and provide better law enforcement for the growing city.
However, CAPF personnel are facing penalties and possible eviction from their homes due to a 2017 policy that limits their housing allotment to 3 years, which they believe is unfair given their high-risk deployments and the disruption it causes to their families' lives.
Maharashtra government approved larger housing for Mumbai Police constables and sub-inspectors, increasing size from 484 sq ft to 538 sq ft.
Disparity in housing sizes between Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra has been removed.
Mumbai faces a severe shortage of police housing, with many personnel commuting from distant suburbs.
Existing lower-rank quarters are as small as 180–220 sq ft, and some buildings have been vacated due to deterioration.
The Maharashtra Police Housing and Welfare Corporation has built around 38,000 homes for police personnel across the state.
