Gill: Main Goal Is World Test Championship Final Next Year
India's cricket team is playing a very special Test match against Sri Lanka.
This match is especially memorable because it will be India's 600th Test match ever.
It is also the 50th Test match to be played at the Galle International Cricket Stadium.
India's captain, Shubman Gill, says their biggest goal is to play in the World Test Championship final next year.
That final match will be held at a famous cricket ground called The Oval in June 2027.
Right now, India are in fifth place in the championship standings.
They lost home series against South Africa and New Zealand, which made qualifying harder.
India have nine Test matches left and need to win about six or seven of them to have a good chance.
To prepare, the team arrived in Sri Lanka early and won a practice match in Colombo.
One of their best bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah, is not playing, but Gill says other bowlers have a big chance to shine.
India face Sri Lanka in the opening Test at Galle International Cricket Stadium, marking India's 600th Test match and the 50th at the venue.
Captain Shubman Gill said the main goal is to play the World Test Championship (WTC) final next year at The Oval in June 2027.
India sit fifth in the WTC standings after home series defeats to South Africa (2-0) and New Zealand (3-0).
With nine Tests remaining, India need to win around six or seven (78 more points to reach 60%) to have a good chance of qualifying.
India arrived early in Sri Lanka and won a three-day warm-up against Sri Lanka Cricket XI in Colombo, with runs for Jaiswal, Gill, Padikkal and Jadeja; Bumrah's absence opens chances for pacers like Prasidh Krishna.
