Alternative-Fuel Cars Overtake Petrol in India’s August Retail
In August 2026, Indian buyers bought more cars using alternative fuels than cars using petrol or ethanol.
CNG, hybrid and electric cars together made up 41.95% of car registrations.
Petrol and ethanol cars made up 40.85%, although petrol remained the biggest single fuel category.
CNG and LPG cars were the largest part of the alternative-fuel group.
Hybrid cars made up 9.04% of sales, and electric cars made up 7.63%.
Dealers said these cars may be attractive because they can cost less to run.
Some buyers were also concerned about the change to E20 petrol.
Overall car sales grew strongly, but FADA said the increase looked larger partly because sales had been weak in August 2025.
CNG, hybrid and electric cars together captured 41.95% of India’s August 2026 passenger-vehicle retail, surpassing petrol/ethanol cars at 40.85%.
CNG/LPG vehicles led alternative fuels with a 25.28% share, followed by hybrids at 9.04% and electric vehicles at 7.63%.
Alternative fuels increased their combined share from 35.26% in August 2025 to 41.95% in August 2026, while petrol/ethanol declined from 46.37% to 40.85%.
Passenger-vehicle retail rose 16.14% year-on-year to 4.02 lakh units, with rural registrations growing 24.99% compared with 10.93% growth in urban markets.
Dealers cited lower running costs and concerns about E20 petrol, while FADA president Sai Giridhar warned that growth was boosted by a weak August 2025 comparison base.

Passenger-vehicle retail reached 4.02 lakh units, its first August crossing of four lakh units, while rural registrations rose 24.99% year-on-year.
Reasons for Caution
FADA cautioned that the strong annual increase partly reflected a weak August 2025 base, when some customers delayed purchases while awaiting a GST rate reduction.
