Brain Activity and Movement: Does Your Brain Know First?
When you decide to move, does your brain know before you do?
Scientists are studying this with experiments.
They found the part of your brain that controls movement (M1 area) activates before and during a conscious decision to move.
This research used a special setup with a person who couldn't move their hand, controlled by a brain-machine interface.
This experiment showed that our brain's activity for movement can start before we're fully aware of wanting to move.
Other studies help understand how our brain makes decisions and the role of different brain areas.
Researchers investigated the intentional chain: intent, action, and effect.
The study used a tetraplegic participant with a brain implant in the M1 area.
Brain activity in the M1 area coincides with conscious recognition of movement.
The timing of activity in M1 differs from other brain areas in previous research.
Findings suggest the brain may initiate action before conscious awareness.
