Jane Street's India Unit Sees Massive Trading Gains Before Regulatory Curbs
Jane Street, a big trading company from the US, had a very successful year in India.
Their local unit made a lot of money from trading, almost six times more than the previous year.
But then, the Indian market regulator, SEBI, accused them of manipulating the market and stopped their operations.
Jane Street says they didn't do anything wrong and is fighting the accusations in court.
Other trading companies also made good profits in India, but many have changed their strategies because of the regulatory scrutiny.
Jane Street's India unit reported a 494% increase in trading gains for the financial year ended March 2025.
Net trading gains after transaction charges were ₹4,700 crore, up from ₹790 crore the previous year.
After-tax profit was ₹2,840 crore, a significant increase from the previous year.
SEBI accused Jane Street of manipulating the Indian stock market and imposed regulatory curbs.
Jane Street has filed an appeal against SEBI's interim order and is seeking crucial information for its defense.
