RBI Rate Hike Raises Home Loan Costs for Buyers

RBI Rate Hike Raises Home Loan Costs for Buyers

The Reserve Bank of India has raised the rate at which banks borrow money from it.

When banks’ borrowing costs rise, home loans can become more expensive.

For a Rs 50 lakh loan over 20 years, a 25-basis-point increase could add about Rs 780 to each monthly payment.

It could also add nearly Rs 1.88 lakh to the total interest paid.

Banks may instead keep monthly payments from rising sharply by extending the time borrowers take to repay.

That can mean staying in debt longer and paying more interest overall.

First-time buyers may qualify for smaller loans or need a larger down payment.

The RBI’s policy panel also raised its inflation and growth forecasts for FY27 and said its stance is now calibrated tightening.
