Chandigarh Admn Orders Dismantling of India's Tallest Air Purifier
Imagine a giant fan meant to clean the air in a busy city.
Chandigarh had one of these very tall air purifiers installed.
The company that put it up said it would clean the air in a big area.
However, after it was turned on, officials found that it only cleaned a small part of the air.
They also discovered it wasn't cleaning the air as well as the company promised.
So, the city government decided to stop using it.
They cut off its electricity and told the company to take it down.
This was a pilot project, and its failure means other planned air purifiers won't be installed.
Chandigarh Administration has disconnected power to India's tallest air purifier at Transport Chowk.
The administration has ordered the firm, Pious Air Private Limited, to dismantle the 24-metre-tall structure.
A third-party assessment by NITTTR found the air purifier covers a limited area and is ineffective.
The decision to terminate the contract was made in July, with a three-month deadline for removal ending in October.
The air purifier was a pilot project, and its failure has setback plans to install similar devices in the city.
