Norway Expands Arctic Brigade Amid Rising NATO Defence Spending
Norway is making one of its Arctic military brigades stronger.
The brigade is near Norway’s border with Russia.
It will get bigger weapons, air defence and better communication equipment.
These additions could let it fire at targets far away.
It could also work more closely with Norwegian and NATO aircraft and ships.
Norway says it wants to protect itself and NATO from possible attacks.
Norway has increased its defence spending since the war in Ukraine began.
Russia has previously said it does not threaten NATO.
The Russian embassy in Oslo did not comment on this expansion.
Norway is expanding its recently established Finnmark Brigade in the Arctic.
The brigade will receive an artillery battalion, air defence battery and communications company.
Its new capabilities include striking land targets up to 40 kilometres away and coordinating fire with aircraft and ships.
Norway is estimated to spend 3.17% of its GDP on defence this year, up from 1.5% in 2014.
The brigade patrols Norway’s 198-kilometre border with Russia, whose government has previously denied posing a threat to NATO.
