Royal Family Member Questions Kambala’s Place in Mysuru Dasara
Kambala is a traditional buffalo race from coastal Karnataka.
This year, organizers plan to include it in the Mysuru Dasara celebrations.
Pramoda Devi Wadiyar, a member of the former Mysore royal family, questioned whether that was a good idea.
She said Kambala is especially important in the Mangaluru region.
She also said the race might get more attention if held at another time.
The Karnataka government may have wanted to add something new to Dasara, according to her comments.
Work is happening on two muddy race tracks in Mysuru.
The event is planned for October 18 and 19.
Pramoda Devi Wadiyar questioned whether Kambala was needed in this year’s Mysuru Dasara festivities.
She said Kambala has its own significance in the Mangaluru region and could have been held separately.
She expressed concern that holding it during Dasara might prevent the event from receiving sufficient attention.
Race-track construction is underway on 17.35 acres near the Visvesvaraya Technological University Regional Centre in Mysuru.
The Kambala event is scheduled for October 18 and 19, with two parallel slush tracks being prepared.
