Chhattisgarh University Granted IPR for Anti-Cancer Rice
A university in Chhattisgarh has been given special rights for a new kind of rice called Sanjeevani.
This rice is special because it might help fight cancer.
The university has been studying this rice for five years.
They found out that it comes from a traditional rice called Laicha, which tribal people in the area have known about for a long time.
The rice is now being tested in a big hospital to make sure it really works.
Other rice types from the university have also been given special rights.
Scientists are working with a research center to check if the rice is good for health.
They found that the rice can make the immune system stronger and might even make cancer cells go away in tests with mice.
It might take another year before this rice is sold in the market.
Indira Gandhi Agriculture University (IGAU) in Raipur has been granted IPR for a rice variety called Sanjeevani with anti-cancer properties.
The rice variety originates from the tribal region in Sukma district, Chhattisgarh, and is derived from the traditional 'Laicha' rice.
Research on the therapeutic rice has been ongoing for five years, with clinical trials currently being conducted at the Tata Memorial Hospital.
The rice variety has successfully undergone in vitro tests and mouse model trials, showing potential immune-boosting and anti-cancer properties.
Five other rice varieties developed by IGAU have also been granted conservation and propagation rights by the PPVFRA.
