Centre Blocks Bhagwant Mann’s Japan Hockey Trip Over Political Clearance
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann wanted to travel to Japan to watch India play hockey.
The match was part of the Asian Games.
The Asian Hockey Federation had invited him and a Punjab government team.
Punjab also wanted to learn how to organize a large sports event.
Punjab is expected to host the Men’s Asian Champions Trophy later.
However, the central government did not give permission for the trip.
Government sources said athletes needed priority for space, security and facilities.
The decision could lead to a political argument before the assembly election.
The Centre denied political clearance for Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s proposed Japan visit.
Mann planned to watch India’s Asian Games hockey semi-final on October 1.
The Asian Hockey Federation invited Mann and a Punjab government delegation to the competition’s concluding stages.
Punjab said the trip would support hockey and preparations for the Men’s Asian Champions Trophy.
Government sources cited athletes’ priority access and the protocol, security and logistical demands of a chief minister’s visit.
