NCST Seeks Report on 18,000 Bighas in Karbi Anglong
The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes (NCST) has asked the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) for a detailed report on 18,000 bighas of land that was given to a company for a big solar power project.
The project was cancelled because the money from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) was taken back.
But the NCST is worried because the land agreement is still valid.
The Indigenous Peoples Party (IPP) says the project could make over 1,500 tribal families leave their homes.
They are also worried about another solar project that might be planned on part of the land.
The NCST wants to make sure the land and the rights of the tribal people are protected.
NCST seeks a detailed report from KAAC on 18,000 bighas of land allotted for a cancelled 1,000 MW solar project in Karbi Anglong.
The project was scrapped after the ADB withdrew a USD 434.25 million loan on May 28, 2025.
NCST is concerned about the unresolved legal status of the land despite the project's cancellation.
IPP alleges that a new 500 MW solar project proposed by APDCL and NLCIL could displace over 1,500 tribal families.
NCST directed KAAC to submit a comprehensive report on the land's current legal status, usage, and future plans.
