Power Ministry targets 16 critical imports for self-sufficiency
The Power Ministry in India has made a list of 16 very important things that are currently imported, like special cables and magnets.
They want to start making these things in India to become self-sufficient.
The list was made with help from experts and companies.
They are asking for feedback by the end of December 2025.
This is important because right now, India relies on other countries for these parts, which can be risky and expensive.
Making these things in India will help save money and make the power system stronger.
The government wants to support local manufacturing and reduce the need to buy from other countries.
The Power Ministry has identified 16 critical imported items for domestic manufacturing to achieve self-sufficiency in the power sector.
The list was prepared by the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) in consultation with IEEMA and industry players like ABB and Toshiba.
Comments from stakeholders are sought by December 29, 2025, with a total of 73 critical items identified, 16 prioritized for immediate attention.
Key items include subsea cables, permanent magnets, and aluminium zinc coated steel sheets, which are currently imported due to technology gaps and limited domestic manufacturing.
The initiative aims to reduce import dependency, strengthen grid resilience, and support the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision by boosting domestic manufacturing.
