‘Meagre sum adds to woes’: Himachal High Court hikes wife’s maintenance after 15 years · indianexpress.com

A woman asked the court for enough money to live after leaving her husband’s home.

She said she had been treated cruelly and had no independent income.

The case took more than 15 years to be resolved.

A lower court had ordered Rs 5,000 per month.

The Himachal Pradesh High Court said that amount was too small and could leave her in poverty.

It raised the payment in stages to reflect rising living costs.

The amount will reach Rs 9,000 per month through April 2026.

It will then increase by 5 per cent every two years.

The court said a husband who can work must help support his wife.

The High Court bench hearing the wife’s maintenance appeal.
