Glacial Collapse Floods Nepal and Tibet, Leaving Thousands Missing

A glacier broke apart in the Himalayas and released a huge rush of water, ice, mud and rocks.

The flood swept through parts of Nepal and Tibet.

It destroyed homes, roads, bridges and work sites.

Nepal reported 579 deaths, while Tibet reported seven.

More than 2,400 people were still missing or could not be contacted.

Some missing people were workers, travelers and pilgrims heading toward Mount Kailash.

Rescue teams used helicopters and searched through mud, tunnels and damaged buildings.

About 350 people were rescued from a hydropower project, but more than 100 others were still trapped.

Rescue workers also had to watch lakes formed by debris because they could cause more flooding.

India, China and Nepal continued rescue, medical and recovery efforts.
