USPS Changes Postmark Rules Affecting Time-Sensitive Mail
The US Postal Service is changing how postmarks work.
Instead of showing the date you dropped off your mail, the postmark will show when the mail is processed by a machine, which could be days later.
This change might cause problems for things like tax payments, bills, and even ballots that need to be received by a certain date.
To avoid late fees, you should mail these items a few days early or ask for a hand-stamped postmark at the post office.
Also, starting in 2026, the cost of shipping packages will go up for some services like Priority Mail and USPS Ground Advantage.
USPS postmarks will now reflect the date mail is processed by an automated sorting machine, not the drop-off date.
Time-sensitive documents like tax payments, bills, and ballots may be affected, risking late fees or penalties.
To avoid issues, mail time-sensitive items several days before the deadline or request a hand-stamped manual postmark.
Shipping rates for Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, USPS Ground Advantage, and Parcel Select will increase in 2026.
The rate increases are part of the 'Delivering For America' initiative to modernize USPS infrastructure.
