SEBI Defends Closing Auction Transition, Says System Improves Price Discovery

The stock market in India has a new way of deciding the final price of a stock each day.

A big organization called SEBI, which watches over the stock market, started this new system called the Closing Auction Session.

In the old way, the closing price was based on the average price of trades during the last 30 minutes of the day.

That could make prices jump around a lot when big investors bought or sold huge amounts.

The new system works like an auction: all buy and sell orders are gathered together at the end of the day.

Then the exchange finds one price that matches the most buyers and sellers.

This is meant to make closing prices fairer and more stable, just like on major exchanges in New York and London.

Some investors are confused because the new closing prices for some stocks differ sharply from the benchmark.

SEBI says the new system will improve transparency and strengthen price discovery over time.
