Delhi Plans Safety Audits for Buildings Older Than 50 Years
The government wants to check some old buildings in Delhi more often.
The plan would focus on Delhi Development Authority buildings that are more than 50 years old.
These buildings might be inspected every 10, five or three years.
The idea was discussed after a building collapsed in Satya Niketan.
Seven people died and 12 people were rescued after the collapse.
The building was being used as accommodation for boys paying guests.
Repair work in the basement and collected water may have played a role, but the exact cause is still being investigated.
The government is also considering a fund to help rebuild old buildings before they become unsafe.
Union Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said buildings over 50 years old under the Delhi Development Authority may face regular safety audits.
The proposed audits could occur every 10, five or three years, depending on the government’s plan.
The proposal followed the collapse of a five-storey building in Satya Niketan that killed seven people and trapped others.
Twelve people were rescued, while possible contributing factors included basement repair work and water accumulation.
The government is also considering a redevelopment fund to help finance reconstruction before buildings become dangerous.
