Delhi University Staff Oppose Aadhaar-Based Biometric Attendance
Delhi University has introduced a new system where non-teaching staff must use their Aadhaar details to mark their attendance with biometric machines.
The staff union says it's unfair because teachers don't have to use this system.
Teachers are against the idea of using this system because they think it affects their dignity and independence.
The university has not yet decided whether to make teachers use the system too.
Some staff are worried that if they don't register, their salary might be affected starting in 2026.
Teachers have written to the university leader to say they don't agree with linking attendance to salary.
Delhi University introduced an Aadhaar-based biometric attendance system for non-teaching staff in November 2023.
The Delhi University and College Karamchari Union insists the system should apply to faculty members to avoid discrimination.
Teachers, including those from progressive groups, oppose the system's extension, citing threats to their dignity and academic autonomy.
The university has not pursued the proposal further but it remains under consideration.
Non-teaching staff who do not register for the system may face salary processing issues from January 2026.
