Mumbai to Widen Drains to Tackle Future Flooding
Mumbai is making changes to help with flooding during heavy rains.
Because the drains couldn't handle all the water on May 26, they will be widened.
This means making the existing water channels bigger.
The goal is for the drains to handle a lot more rain in a short time.
Experts from places like IIT will help with the planning.
Also, local solutions, like cleaning up waste, are also being considered to keep the water flowing smoothly.
BMC to widen drains to handle up to 120 mm of rainfall per hour.
The decision follows flash flooding on May 26.
The current major drains can handle around 55 mm rainfall.
A survey by IIT or VJTI will determine the widening needed.
Local interventions, such as waste management, will also be implemented.
