Panel Seeks Ecological Flow Fix for Yamuna Rejuvenation
A group of experts in the Indian government looked at how polluted the Yamuna River is.
They found that the river is in very bad shape because people and factories are dumping too much waste into it.
The experts said that to make the river healthy again, they need to make sure there is always enough clean water flowing in it, stop factories from dumping waste without treating it, and use all the dirty water for something useful instead of letting it pollute the river.
They also said that the government should check on the factories more often to make sure they are not breaking the rules.
The experts want the government to fix these problems to help the Yamuna River get better.
A parliamentary panel reported on the 'profound ecological collapse' of the Yamuna River, recommending fixing ecological flow and halting unregulated industrial waste discharge.
The committee identified key interventions including fixing an ecological flow of 23 cumecs for the lean season and halting unchecked sewage and effluent discharge.
The panel noted low-capacity utilization of common effluent treatment plants (CETPs) in Delhi, with only 34% capacity being used.
The committee recommended mapping all industrial units using GIS and upgrading CETPs to handle toxic pollutants like heavy metals.
The panel also called for mandatory mapping and formalization of the desludging tanker ecosystem and the reuse of treated wastewater.
