Kanpur Scraps Shivalaya Park After Opposition to Buddha Park Plan
The local government in Kanpur, India, decided not to build a new park called Shivalaya Park.
The plan was to create a park with religious features inside of a park that was already built named Buddha Park.
Many people, including political opponents and even members of the ruling party, spoke out against the idea.
They were worried that the new park would change the meaning of the original park and upset people from certain communities.
Because of the strong opposition, the local government decided to cancel the project and keep Buddha Park as it is.
Kanpur Municipal Corporation (KMC) proposed a Shivalaya Park in Kanpur.
The plan faced opposition from various groups, including Mayawati and BJP corporators.
Concerns centered on building the park on the grounds of the existing Buddha Park.
Opponents argued it would hurt sentiments of Scheduled Caste communities.
KMC has denied plans to change Buddha Park and scrapped Shivalaya Park plans.
