Gadkari Discusses CAFE Norms with Automakers
Minister Nitin Gadkari met with top officials from several car companies to talk about new rules for fuel efficiency.
Some companies, like Hyundai and Tata Motors, are worried that the new rules might make it unfair for them because they don't make very small cars.
They also said that small cars from other companies have failed safety tests.
Other companies, like Maruti Suzuki and Renault, want the rules to help small cars because they make a lot of them.
The minister promised to discuss their concerns at the next meeting.
The new rules are supposed to start in 2027 and will last until 2032.
Nitin Gadkari met with automakers to discuss proposed CAFE norms for fuel efficiency.
Companies like Hyundai, Kia, Tata Motors, and Mahindra & Mahindra opposed incentives for small cars under 909 kg.
Maruti Suzuki and Renault advocated for incentives for small cars, as they have a significant presence in that category.
Opposing companies argued that small cars have failed safety tests and that the norms would promote unsafe vehicles.
The revised CAFE-III standards will apply from April 1, 2027, to March 31, 2032, with weight-based exemptions for small petrol cars.
