GRP Inspector Booked for Bribery in Extortion Probe
Imagine a police officer who was supposed to be investigating a case where another police officer was accused of taking money illegally.
Instead of doing his job, the investigating officer asked for a bribe of his own!
He wanted Rs 10 lakh to make the case go away.
A lawyer acted as the middleman.
The person being extorted went to the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) who set a trap.
When the lawyer accepted half of the money, he was arrested.
Now, the original investigating officer is also in trouble and is being sought by the police.
This happened after the GRP has been involved in a series of corruption allegations.
GRP inspector Rohit Sawant is accused of demanding a bribe in an extortion case.
Sawant allegedly sought Rs 10 lakh to go easy on the case.
A lawyer, Arunkumar Singh, was caught accepting Rs 4.5 lakh on Sawant's behalf.
Singh was arrested, and Sawant is now also named as an accused.
The GRP has been under scrutiny for corruption, leading to suspensions and transfers.
