Satya Niketan Collapse Highlights Delhi’s Hostel and Safety Gaps

A building in Satya Niketan, Delhi, collapsed on Sunday and several students died.

Many students in the area live in rented flats or paying-guest rooms.

They do this because colleges have far fewer hostel beds than students who need them.

One student said his college has 4,500 students but only 150 hostel places.

Students and teachers said families usually check things like food and Wi-Fi, but cannot easily judge whether a building is structurally safe.

They also said authorities do not regularly inspect these private accommodations.

Some opposition leaders said rescue efforts were too slow and that officials should be held responsible.

They called for more hostels, safer buildings and limits on rents.
