US and Canada Escalate Tariff Dispute Over Trade Barriers

The United States and Canada are arguing about how they trade goods.

The White House says Canada has unfair rules that make it harder for American companies to sell vehicles, alcohol and dairy products.

It also says Canada blocked some Gulfstream business jets.

The United States responded by placing 50% tariffs on Canadian imports after talks failed.

Canada said it would charge matching tariffs on American goods.

Prime Minister Mark Carney also announced USD 7.5 billion to help Canadian workers and businesses.

The two countries disagree about who has been treated unfairly and how large their trade imbalance is.

The dispute could make buying and selling between the neighboring countries more difficult.
