Dating App Engagement Sours, Scientist Alleges ₹3 Crore Extortion Demand
A man and a woman met on a phone app that helps people find dates.
They liked each other and got engaged with their families' permission about a year ago.
The man says the woman started asking him to give her money and put his property in her name before they got married.
Both families became worried and decided to call off the engagement.
Then the woman filed a cheating case against the man at the police station.
The man says the woman then sent him scary emails asking for a huge amount of money, ₹3 crore, to drop the case.
He says she even threatened to harm him and his family if he did not pay.
The man went to the police in Tirupati and showed them the emails.
The police have now registered a case against the woman and are investigating.
Vamsi, a scientist at a Chennai hospital and Tirupati resident, met Namrata, an insurance company deputy manager from Hyderabad, on a dating app.
The couple got engaged about a year ago with their families' consent, but Vamsi alleges Namrata pressured him to send money and transfer property to her before marriage.
After both families decided to call off the engagement, Namrata registered a cheating case against Vamsi with Vanasthalipuram police in 2025 (Crime No. 984/2025).
Vamsi alleges Namrata sent him threatening emails over the past month, demanding ₹3 crore to withdraw the case and threatening to kill him and his family if not paid.
Tirupati East police have registered a case against Namrata and launched an investigation into the allegations, including the extortion demand.
