Mamdani Launches Renew Crew to Quickly Repair New York Parks
A playground in Brooklyn was closed for almost two years.
Eight-year-old Maxime made a video asking Mayor Zohran Mamdani to help reopen it.
The playground reopened a few weeks later.
Mamdani has now created a team called the Renew Crew.
The team has 24 workers who can fix things such as playground equipment, benches, fences and sports courts.
They will work in parks across New York City.
The city hopes each repair will take three weeks or less.
The team’s first project is at Dry Harbor Playground in Queens.
People can report broken park facilities through the city’s 311 system.
Eight-year-old Maxime’s video appeal helped prompt the reopening of McKinley Park’s playground in Brooklyn.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani created a 24-member Renew Crew of skilled tradespeople to repair city parks.
The team will handle smaller repairs at playgrounds, sports courts and recreation centres across all five boroughs.
The city aims to complete each project within three weeks and take on up to 30 projects annually.
The programme has a reported $2.3 million budget and is separate from the city’s larger capital projects.
