OSCE Members Probe Georgia Over Rights Concerns
A group of countries, including the UK, Canada, and Germany, are working together to investigate Georgia because they are worried about how the country is treating its people.
Georgia used to be very democratic and friendly with the West, but lately, it has been acting more like an authoritarian country and getting closer to Russia.
The European Union (EU) has also expressed concerns, saying that Georgia is not living up to its status as an EU candidate.
The Georgian government has been restricting freedoms, making it harder for civil society to operate, and taking legal action against opposition groups.
The ruling party, Georgian Dream, wants to ban the main opposition groups, but the opposition says this is just a political move.
UK, Canada, Germany, and 21 other OSCE members launch an expert mission to examine Georgia's human rights situation.
Concerns include restrictions on freedom of expression, legislative reforms constricting civil society, and legal actions against opposition groups.
Georgia, once a pro-Western democracy, has turned increasingly authoritarian and deepened ties with Russia.
EU has accused Georgia of 'serious democratic backsliding' and considers it a candidate nation 'in name only'.
Ruling Georgian Dream party aims to ban main opposition groups, which the opposition claims is politically motivated.
