Contrasting Reports on 1983 Assam Violence
A long time ago, in 1983, there was a lot of violence in a place called Assam in India.
The worst part of this violence was something called the Nellie massacre, where many people, mostly Muslims, were killed in one night.
Two different groups looked into what happened and wrote reports.
One official report said that the elections held at that time were not to blame for the violence.
The other unofficial report said that the elections were the main cause of the violence.
Both reports agreed that there were problems with people coming into Assam from another country, Bangladesh, and that this was one of the reasons for the violence.
No one was ever punished for the killings, and it's still a sad and unresolved part of Assam's history.
Two reports on the 1983 Assam violence were tabled in the Assam legislative assembly, offering differing perspectives on the events.
The official Tewary Commission report stated that the decision to hold elections cannot be blamed for the outbreak of violence.
The unofficial Mehta Commission report stated that the elections were the main and immediate cause of the violence.
The official report put the death toll of the Nellie massacre at around 1,800, while the unofficial report pegged it at 3,000.
Both reports highlighted demographic anxieties in the state, with the Mehta report stating that the 'foreigners problem' was the real issue.
